CMS Watch has found that some of the biggest Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Suites vendors are experiencing the most change right now, and therefore, customers’ erstwhile “safest” bets might also carry significant near-term risks. This analysis stems from research CMS Watch conducted for its “ECM Suites Report,” released [April 17th], which evaluates 30 vendors from 5 continents.

While product and institutional evolution is healthy, highly rapid or unduly tepid change can raise different types of risk to enterprise technology investments. To plot the current state of product and vendor evolution among major ECM Suites suppliers, CMS Watch has developed a “Vendor Risk Profile.”  “We are not making value judgments here,” clarified CMS Watch founder Tony Byrne. “There is no ‘magic’ or ‘leading’ square.” Rather, Byrne added, “Buyers should understand that different vendors carry very different sets of risks, and therefore enterprises need to carefully match their tolerance profile against the current state of any potential supplier.” For example, Byrne noted, “Some buyers are going to be more comfortable than others working with a tool that has just been overhauled, like SharePoint.”

Google has beaten out Microsoft yet again: this time, the prize was Doubleclick, a company that is a leader in digital marketing technology and services. For $3.1 billion dollars, Doubleclick will add their know-how in ad management technology for media buyers and sellers with Google’s ad platform and publisher monetization services; essentially, Doubleclick has the better tools to utilize with a large clientele base that Google poses. The clear winner is Google - for with this acquisition it will only strengthen their ad network and expand the inventory amongst publishers while further entrench themselves with advertisers and ad agencies.

There are concerns that anti-trust laws may come down on this acquisition but Google is reportedly brushing aside any concerns and looking forward in bring Doubleclick into the Google fold; yet, Microsoft and the other Internet search competitors are sharpening their axes and considering their options on whether they can stop this acquisition; and if they can’t - how they are to compete against a true giant amongst the titans.

Microsoft had been a fierce competitior for Doubleclick but they simply don’t have the network and the potential force in the marketplace that Google possesses.

The news of the acquisition comes the same week that Doubleclick released the latest version of its DART Enterprise 6.5 software, which allows enterprise-level companies to better forecast and deliver an inventory of ad into the marketplace, thanks largely to improvements in its dashboard functions and flexibility of its reporting tool.

Britiish Telecom has shown enterprise search vendor Autonomy the door and has chosen Cambridge, MA-based Endeca and their Information Access Platform (IAP) so they can create a “Common Capabilities” across the entire group, including standardization on key platforms and applications. BT is the UK’s largest telecom provider and a principle systems integrator and managed service provider. With Endeca’s IAP, BT wants to prove four key areas through ROI: greater e-commerce revenue; reduce customer complaints and improve service in this area; improve in-direct revenue through better customer service; and, reduce call center costs.

BT will spend the next quarter building their core platform with Endeca and then being deploying applications throughout the organization. Endeca IAP’s has been a success for many of its corporate clientele, including IBM, Hyatt, Walmart.com, and Boeing. This is Autonomy first big loss in the enterprise search market but a loss they can absorb from the number of other success they have had in the last year.

Database security company Guardium is reporting they have the “industry’s first comprehensive solution for database leak prevention” called Guardium DBLP. This software will reportedly locate and classify sensitive information automatically in databases, and prevent suspicious activity “based on proactive, real-time policies and continuous comparisons to normal activity.” It’s built to ID unauthorized user actions by monitoring traffic both to and from database servers.  Guardium GLBP is the second in a series of solutions built upon Guardium Version 6.0 platform. The first offering was called Change Control Solution for Databases, which was announced at the RSA Conference 2007.

The Waltham, MA-based company combines three technologies in their protective software:

1. A Database Content Classification & Policy Engine

2. An Extrusion Policy Engine 

3. Database Intrusion/Extrusion Prevention 

“The industry has not previously had effective tools to monitor information flowing from sensitive database repositories,” said Trent Henry, Senior Analyst, Burton Group, in a prepared statement. “A combination of regulatory and consumer trust concerns now makes this a critical part of the enterprise security architecture.” 

Guardium also provides the only solution with compliance workflow automation that automatically generates audit reports on a regularly and distributes the documents to designated individuals for electronic approval. This approach is designed to reduce cost and improve compliance efforts.

Beginning on April 10, Google Earth users will be able to witness the effects of the atrocities in Darfur. The 21st Century’s first genocide can now be viewed as part of a new program known as ”Crisis in Darfur,” an initative that enables the 200 million Google Earth users to visualize the details in the region that includes the destruction of villages and the location of refugee camps.

This feature is part of an effort to draw attention to the crisis in Sudan. The Washington Post reported that Samuel Zell, the real estate billionaire who is purchasing The Tribune Company, wants news aggregators like Google and Yahoo to pay for newspapers’ content, and that newspapers should respect the value of their stories and not give it away to the 500-lb gorillas. Many newspapers do have an arrangement, for example, with Google, to access content in exchange of a cut of ad-revenue, but search engines help spread that content - which is what Zell wants to quell. This proposal of Zell was made in a speech at Stanford University in early April.

“If all of the newspapers in America did not allow Google to steal their content, how profitable would Google be?” Zell said. “Not very.”

The Tribune owns 16 newspapers throughout the US, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Baltimore, plust twenty-six broadcast outlets. Zell is new to the media industry; one must wonder: do you want Google to be a friend or an enemy, or how far other newspaper companies would consider the notion to curtail access, which some have used as a means of promotion and marketing of their newspapers? The notion certain rubs up against hard Google’s philosophy of open-access to all.

The New York Times reported that AOL will launch a new paid advertising service in mid-April to help advertisers better target AOL users…thanks with a help from Google. Enterprise Search provider Autonomy Corporation has released its Virage Automatic Copyright Infringement Detection (ACID) to aid media companies and production centers to protect its intellectual property being distributed illegally on the Internet.

The foundation of ACID is Autonomy’s proprietary Meaning-Based Computing that includes patented image and audio analysis technology. ACID is promising to be fast, efficient and scalable to detect copyright breaches, no matter where the offense is occuring and the format, and in real-time.

As the Internet continues grow as a media outlet, applications like ACID will become an invaluable tool to enforce copyright infringement. And what makes ACID stand-out is that it does not rely on watermarks and is not deterred by random changes in format or noise and codec changes.

Virage is a subsidary of Autonomy, which was the first company to capture, encode and index media products.

Norwegian-based Fast Search is acquiring Convera Corporation’s RetrievalWare unit for $23 million cash. The purchase Convera’s enterprise search software and personnel will add to Fast Search growing knowledge (and eliminate a competitor), but it will give Fast an in-road into the US government since 70% of this unit’s clientele are Federal agencies, something that rivals like Google have been pursuing aggressively of late, a sector that has been seeking better performances via enterprise search.

Paul Bauert, SVP of Fast’s Corporate Development told an interviewer that they plan to integrate Vienna, VA-based Convera customers to the Fast platform. Those customers will receive some features unavailable to them under their Convera contract, including more robust scalability, wider flexibility to link databases, and better queries-per-second performance.

News of this acquisition and Fast’s recent contractural agreements with Comcast and Target sent it stocks soaring as the Oslo company becomes more integrated into the American market and may become a verb unto its own day.
